Cartouches
A cartouche is the way an ancient Egyptian’s name would have been recorded.
The cartouche was stone, a rectangle shape, with rounded corners,
and a design at one end almost like a handle.
Hieroglyphs [Ancient Egyptian Letters] sounding out the name, were carved into the cartouche, along with a symbol which showed if the person was male or female. They could be carved left to right, right to left or top to bottom.
For our cartouches: - we mixed and kneaded dough,
- fashioned it into the correct shape
- carved the hieroglyphs
- painted the finished product
